Profit from Mug Sales

August 7, 2008

We are pleased to announce that $750.00 from mug sales is being deposited into the Scholarship Fund. There are approximately 40 mugs left from the first shipment. There has been a $125.00 savings on the second order that was shipped. We will be starting all over with the mug sales.

Since these sales are limited to those who attended the old Piggott High School, we felt it unnecessary to ask each class member to sell a certain number of mugs. We did expect, however, that each class member would purchase a mug. As of this date, no orders have been received by mail. There is a chance that the mugs will be gone before the 2010 reunion. We will be selling them at the yard sales and at class reunions between now and then. There are no plans at this time to make an order for a 3rd shipment, so when they are gone, there will be no more.

Additions to Old Postings

FYI - - - Somtimes when there are more thoughts on an existing post, it will be added to that posting in a different color of print. Since there are no "new" posts, it might be that some of you would not scroll down and see the new entry on a older post.

A Memorial to Marcia Watson Rogers

It has been suggested that we do something in Memory of Marcia Watson Rogers who died from leukemia before our 25th class reunion. Since we did not have a scholarship fund set up at that time, we have not done anything as a class to honor her memory. Some have expressed the desire of donating a bench to Heritage Park in her name. We would like your input in the comments of this posting.

We have had suggestions of possibly purchasing a book for the Piggott Library in Marcia's memory or getting a brick in her name for the historic walk on the courthouse side walk. Both will be checked into, but we need some feed back as to how class members feel about both. As no e-mails will be sent, this is the only communication you will be getting.

Jimmy's Memorial Service

On Saturday, June 21, twenty-three class members from the class of 70 gathered with other friends and relatives to honor the memory of Jimmy Hanna. Joe did a wonderful job conducting the services. Rick read the obit and spoke about his and Jimmy's days as college room mates and the evening that Jimmy spent with him before going to boot camp. Veda read a wonderful poem entitled "The Flower Bill" written by Debbie Mayberry Rhew who was unable to attend. Francine read "Heaven" a poem provided by Bob Gallegly, also who was unable to attend. Marty gave a summary of her feelings the past week while putting together a memory board of high school pictures of Jimmy and the reunions that he had attended. Five former football team members and 3 other classmates served as pall bearers. The class of 70 coordinated the food for the meal served after the services.

We will hold a special place in our hearts for Jimmy.

The class presented Merita, Jimmy's widow, with a Memory Book compiled by Linda Brown Wells with several classmates' memories of Jimmy. Merita will reside in Piggott at 614 South Garfield. Let's all remember her in our prayers. Her world has changed since she has lost her soul mate and nothing will ever be the same for her without Jimmy.

If anyone would like to contribute to the Memory Book, please send your memories of Jimmy to piggottclassof70@yahoo.com and we will see that Merita gets it.

Merita's comments to the class:

I don't know of a quicker way to let everyone know how much Saturday meant to me. I know that Jim was looking on, smiling and laughing that he got everyone together one last time. The words were all very comforting and I can't wait to get to the memory book to read everyone's memories. I left it all at my parents so that we wouldn't be packing it to go back to Ark. I hope to be moved by the end of August so that Mom and Dad can get back to their lives. I think u did a wonderful service remembering Jimmy and I will never forget it. I want to thank each and everyone of you for all that was done, the words, the set-up and everything that you did. I hope that the scholarship fund received some good donations. Please remember when I get moved, my doors will always be open to any and all of Jimmy's teammates and classmates. He was proud to be a part of the Class of 1970.

Thank you all so very much.
Merita Hanna

In Loving Memory to Jimmy

GROWING MEMORIES

I sat and listened as Veda read
The poem written by Debbie Rhew.
I had it all planned in my head
And knew exactly what I would do.
I bought a flower to plant in my garden,
To watch it grow and bloom.
I wanted it to remind me of Jimmy
Although I won't forget him soon.
I shopped 'til I had the right flower
A Crepe Myrtle that would last
It would not die by the hour
And hopefully would grow real fast.
The pot was big and wide
The plant dwarfed by size.
But putting that all aside
I felt it was my joy and a prize.

I planted it with loving care
Oh, the rich dirt that I used,
Memories of Jimmy we'll share
And they will not be abused.
Now, from year to year,
I will watch my flower grow
And as I shed a tear,
I hope that Jimmy will know

I do not need the flower
I'll honor him in my heart,
But it's growing by the hour
And remembering him is my part.

Marty Renard
With assistance from Debbie Rhew

HEAVEN

God saw that he was getting tired
and a cure was not to be, so
He put his arms around him and whispered
“Come home with me”.
With tearful eyes we watched him suffer
And saw him fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.
Golden hearts stopped beating
Determined spirits were at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Great memories and in the spirit of honor:
Haiku for Jimmy
I shall remember from childhood's panorama
Your kindness, your smile.
Be at peace.
