A Memorial to Marcia Watson Rogers

It has been suggested that we do something in Memory of Marcia Watson Rogers who died from leukemia before our 25th class reunion. Since we did not have a scholarship fund set up at that time, we have not done anything as a class to honor her memory. Some have expressed the desire of donating a bench to Heritage Park in her name. We would like your input in the comments of this posting.

We have had suggestions of possibly purchasing a book for the Piggott Library in Marcia's memory or getting a brick in her name for the historic walk on the courthouse side walk. Both will be checked into, but we need some feed back as to how class members feel about both. As no e-mails will be sent, this is the only communication you will be getting.

At the time of Marcia's death, there was no class organization as there is now, but her death did not go unnoticed by classmates. Several of us made cash donations that were left with Rick Rodery at his law office. I do not remember the amount but it was given to her daughter as being from her classmates. Her daughter sent each of us a thank you note card. Some of us attended her wake, but as I remember, only one classmate, Donna Parks nee Coyle, attended her funeral service. Of course, it was on a weekday, and as most of us worked at that time, it was difficult for us to attend her funeral. At that time, I was very disappointed by the response to the death of one of our classmates who had attended elementary school in Pollard & Piggott & then high school for 4 years in Piggott. I agree that something more should be done in her memory so, perhaps, this would vindicate us as a class. If a park bench is purchased in her memory, it would be good to get one made of wrought iron or some type of longlasting material, if affordable, that would be there for years to come as the wood parts of the wood & metal benches will deteriorate if there is not proper care given to them. Another possibhility is to place a stone brick in the Historic Walkway on the south side of the court square in her memory. The last that I knew, the cost was $100per brick. I do not know who the contact person is for this, but surely, someone in the courthouse or Piggott Chamber of Commerce office could advise re this. Good luck in this endeavor. I am pleased that something more is being done in her memory since the earlier response was so poor. Michael Howell

I was not aware of any donation that the class gave Wendy.
Now that we are united as a class, we can do more to honor her memory.
I think that there was at least one other person from our class who attended her funeral, but I can not be sure since I was unable to attend and keep peace at home.
The brick on the Historic Walkway has been suggested and we will check into that as well.

I remember taking money to Rick's office in Marcia's memory and getting the thank you card from Wendy. (I still have it somewhere, I imagine.) The park bench we had put out in honor of Jim's mother was $250.00 and it is one of the ones that is made of wood, so the permanent ones might or might not be more than we need to spend on one person. (face it, we are getting older and there are several of us left, thank goodness.) All of the suggestions sound good though...a book at the library a brick,or a bench in the park , I am sure her family would appreciate any of them.
